parent coaching
I support parents of children (from early childhood through young adulthood) to manage tantrums, noncompliance, family conflict, anxiety and mood concerns, and navigating transitional periods. With a background in School Psychology, I enjoy supporting parents in the process of communicating with school systems while navigating appropriate educational supports and accommodations. Additionally, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children (DBT-C) very effective approaches for parents of children ages 2-7 and 7-12, respectively.
Parent Coaching (Children, Adolescents & Young Adults)
It can be overwhelming for parents to support their children who exhibit emotion dysregulation, ADHD, aggression, and other difficult behaviors. A large component of my work involves using Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapies to teach parents to manage their own emotions and validate their child's emotions, thus reducing family conflict, strengthening relationships, and facilitating behavior change. I teach parents to communicate effectively to set and hold boundaries, provide reinforcement (praise, rewards, attention, etc.) and use consequences effectively (and sparingly).
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)
Parenting anxious children brings on it's own set of challenges. SPACE is an evidence-based, structured approach to help parents manage these difficulties. In fact, it is not always necessary (or most useful) for children to participate in therapy in order to address anxiety and related disorders. We'll focus on identifying ways in which you might be providing accommodations (such as dropping demands including regular school attendance, or changing your behaviors to protect your child from experiencing OCD-related distress) -- which might actually be counterproductive. We'll work to decrease these accommodations while putting other solutions in place. You'll learn to validate your child's emotions while encouraging them to face their fears. This approach is also very effective for parents of young adults struggling with the transition to independent adulthood (often known as "failure to launch") by setting limits and reasonable expectations. Additional information about SPACE can be found here.
